Pump-Action

Another idea would be a FPS-style game, where the player would NOT be doing the aiming, but would operate a pump-action shotgun in-game, and they would be wielding a hand pump in real life, connected to a phidget sensor. The player would pump their shotgun with the handpump, and would possibly fire it with a second footpump(?). The player would have to time their shots just right (Sort of like Elite Beat Agents' system, if anyone knows that.) If thy fire too early, the shot would miss, so they would have to wait for the perfect moment to fire. The downside to this would be that if there numerous enemies on screen, things can get hectic, so the player would have to pump and shoot. I'm just worried this might be a bit too ambitious for one week.

  1. would there be an aiming system or just like puzzle bobble and just wait and aim?

  2. I was thinking more along the lines of the computer/program aims FOR them, and all they have to do is pump their shotguns and wait for the crosshairs to level on their target before firing. The player would have to juggle between accuracy and speed, if they fire off too quickly they may miss, wasting precious time reloading, which leaves them vulnerable to getting attacked. It's sort of like house of the dead meets guitar hero, meets Elite Beat Agents.

  3. oh so its almost a combination of the both. interesting, like i was thinking, if the hand pump moved up and down and the the foot pump moved left and right. then just have aminigun and just have the player just constantly blasting enemies. but the enmies do multiply and get faster.

  4. Hmm, yeah that sounds pretty decent as well. Really reminds me of the very first gatling gun ever invented, which was essentially crank-operated. It would only fire as long as the shooter was working the crank, rotating it at a stable pace.

  5. well i'm very much liking this idea more now. simple and can be fun. put in a combo kill counter and ppl will love it.

also i was thinking of a dynamite blowing or something like plunger blowing game. because of the hand pump.

  6. Could have the foot pump as like a cooling system too so if you fire too fast the gun over heats but the more you pump with your foot the faster you'll be able to shoot

  7. Sounds good. Or the footpump could work as a reloading mechanism, like.. um.. What's the name of that arcade shooter, the one where you work the pedal to hide behind cover to reload?

  8. wait tim...do you mean pumping the foot pedal cools down the gun?

  9. Yeah, a cooling mechanism sounds a bit better than a reloading one, as you will have to keep pumping. Another idea would be similar to Metro 2033, in the game there are a couple of pneumatic guns that the player would have to pump in game to build up pressure, the higher the pressure the more damaging the projectiles fired. Perhaps a similar thing could be used?

  10. ok, well would you be able to game hax, by pressing the foot pedal and the hand pump at the same time?

like i know it would exert 2x as much energy doing it that way, but i can see a problem causing strain on a persons back.

  11. Yeah it might be a little painful now that you mention it, body's in an awkward angle. Perhaps they will have to work the pedal at certain moments at a time(cooling down the weapon/building air pressure), then switch to their plunger pump for shooting.

  12. So it would be a case of, player fires rapidly with the gun, but (in the case of it being a pneumatic weapon) subsequent shots would become weaker and weaker until the player would have to stop shooting to build up pressure again.

  13. Perhaps make it so that when the pressure runs out, they're unable to fire.

  14. have we got a hand pump? are you thinking of it being painful bending over to use one resting on the ground? we could use a hand held one. We need to try it out so we know!!

  15. Well, for the rapid fire shooting I thought a regular bike (plunger type) pump would be enough. If we were gonna make a game with a shotgun, I would prefer to use a hand pump (The kinds we saw at the party shop) because it would be more like wielding a shotgun and pumping it, adding to the immersion (there's that term for it, I forgot what it is at the moment.)

  16. that sounds fantastic. but judging by the short amount of time we have, i dunno if it can be done ><
